Sawah Bera
2026
mixed media on canvas

“Sawah Bera” refers to fallow rice paddies.
This piece is inspired by the muted browns and still waters of Bali’s fields before new growth begins. It first took shape as a bright composition with fluorescent colour blocks, but it didn’t feel right. I reworked it while the paddies in front of our home were being ploughed, letting the calm tones of soil and water guide the palette instead.
Coffee grounds, sand, and volcanic sand were layered and removed to create this quiet, horizon-like surface.
